A New Pace for the City: The Royal Garden Kowloon East

A new chapter unfolds quietly on the edge of Hong Kong’s restless rhythm. In Tseung Kwan O, where the city begins to loosen its grip, The Royal Garden Kowloon East emerges as a studied retreat—measured, composed, and attuned to a different pace of luxury.

The property marks the first expansion of the Royal Garden brand in over four decades. The transformation is less about reinvention and more about refinement: an urban resort distilled into its essential qualities—light, space, and a sense of calm that feels increasingly rare in the city.

Across 366 guest rooms and seven private villas, the design language leans into warmth and restraint. Oak finishes, muted olive and apricot tones, and soft spatial transitions create interiors that feel closer to a private residence than a hotel. The villas, discreetly set with their own gardens, introduce a more intimate dimension—pet-friendly, quietly indulgent, and designed for extended stays that blur the line between escape and routine.

Family life is woven into the experience with a subtle playfulness. Interconnected rooms, bunk-bed studios, and themed suites—ranging from ocean-inspired hideaways to castle-like enclaves—offer a sense of narrative rather than novelty.

Elsewhere, shared spaces such as the Garden Lounge unfold like a tropical conservatory, layered with greenery, golden accents, and a relaxed informality that invites lingering.

At ground level, the Fine Foods Lounge continues the brand’s quiet rituals: artisanal cakes, delicate pastries, and coffee served with precision. Above it all, Ponentino—set to open mid-2026—reinterprets the legacy of Sabatini Ristorante Italiano with a lighter, more contemporary touch. Positioned on the rooftop, the restaurant extends outward into an open terrace, where views stretch across Tseung Kwan O and the horizon softens at dusk.

Wellness is approached with similar clarity. A 25-metre outdoor pool, a considered fitness space, and the gently animated Kids Club, Giggle Hill, sit alongside communal areas designed less for spectacle and more for stillness. Even the event spaces—anchored by the light-filled Diamond Room—carry the same visual restraint, favouring natural light and quiet materiality over grandeur.

Designed by LAAB Architects, the hotel draws from its immediate landscape rather than the city’s skyline. The result is a fluid dialogue between indoors and out—an architecture that feels open, breathable, and intentionally unhurried.

The Royal Garden Kowloon East does not attempt to compete with Hong Kong’s intensity. Instead, it steps slightly aside from it, offering a composed alternative: a place where the city is still within reach, but no longer dictates the experience.
