Mondrian Hong Kong: Art-Led Design and Harbour Views in Tsim Sha Tsui

Mondrian Hong Kong marks the lifestyle hotel brand’s first opening in Greater China. Set on Hart Avenue in Tsim Sha Tsui, it places guests close to the MTR, Victoria Harbour and the West Kowloon Cultural District. At street level, neon signs, late-night restaurants and long-established tailors define the neighbourhood; above, the view opens across the harbour towards Hong Kong Island.

Designed by Karin Krautgartner of byKK, the hotel draws from Hong Kong’s maritime history, tailoring traditions and graphic urban character. Angled forms, polished surfaces and saturated colour meet softer textures and sculptural furniture, with works by local and international artists appearing throughout.

The theatrical arrival space is anchored by a two-storey mosaic depicting figures suspended underwater. Other references are more discreet: panelled walls recall the precision of tailoring, lamps echo the sails of traditional junk boats, and lacquered minibar cabinets take cues from Chinese sewing boxes. Pink mirrored lifts play with the geometry of tangram puzzles.

The hotel’s 324 rooms, including 12 suites, are conceived as elevated viewpoints over the city. Our Premier Harbour room combines a neutral palette with rounded furniture, clean-lined joinery and carefully placed colour, allowing the view to remain its strongest feature.

Large windows frame ferries crossing Victoria Harbour by day and illuminated towers after dark. Although compact, the room is efficiently arranged, with a lookout area positioned towards the skyline.

Premier Harbour Room

On the 38th floor, AVOCA brings the hotel’s local perspective into its food-and-drink programme. Taking its name from an Irish word meaning “the meeting of waters”, the award-winning bar looks across the harbour while drawing inspiration from Kowloon’s culinary culture.

Curved seating, geometric details and polished surfaces create a smart but relaxed setting, with DJs giving the room a livelier rhythm after dark.

The sharing menu moves between seafood-led dishes and playful Asian references. Fragrant hamachi sashimi pairs thinly sliced fish with tomato essence, aromatic herbs, finger lime and sesame soy.

Lobster and crab rolls place typhoon shelter-style seafood, fermented black beans and crisp fried garlic inside soft brioche buns.

More substantial plates include linguine with half a Boston lobster, cherry tomatoes, chilli, parsley, lemon zest and a rich shellfish sauce.

Designed for two or three, the Booming Surf & Turf brings together striploin carpaccio, whole Boston lobster, octopus, snapper and clams sautéed with lemon and white wine.

A selection of cocktails presented and displayed in perfume-inspired spray bottles.

The cocktails offer AVOCA’s clearest interpretation of Hong Kong flavours. Mango Pomelo Colada revisits the city’s much-loved mango pomelo sago dessert with pandan-infused Planteray white rum, clarified colada mix, coconut, mango-pomelo espuma and sago.

Inspired by cheung fun, the Sesame and Peanut Butter Sour turns the Chinese street-food favourite into a silky whisky cocktail, blending roasted peanut with earthy sesame syrup and a light crown of foam. Savoury, smooth and aromatic.

One floor above, Carna by Dario Cecchini introduces the Tuscan butcher’s nose-to-tail philosophy to Hong Kong. Designed by Joyce Wang, the restaurant has a warmer, more ceremonial character, shaped by arches, stained glass, rich materials and expansive harbour views.

Mondrian Hong Kong is at its most convincing when it allows Kowloon to remain visible. The city appears in the views, materials, art and menus without being reduced to decoration. Instead, the hotel offers a considered perspective on Tsim Sha Tsui, moving between the energy of the streets and the cinematic calm of Victoria Harbour from above.
