Art Mai Gallery Hotel Chiang Mai: An Art-Inspired Stay in Nimman

In Chiang Mai’s Nimman neighbourhood, independent galleries, cafés and creative spaces provide the setting for Art Mai Gallery Hotel. Contemporary Thai art shapes both its public spaces and guestrooms, with paintings, fashion and design extending the gallery experience into the stay.

Each accommodation floor takes its cues from a particular artistic movement, from Op Art and Pop Art to Abstract Art, Surrealism and Impressionism. During our visit, works by emerging artists occupied the gallery spaces, introducing a changing exhibition programme alongside the hotel’s permanent interiors.

On the third floor, devoted to Op Art, the Artist Signature Room by Thai artist and designer Jitsing Somboon gives this approach a distinctly graphic expression. Titled ‘New Kid on the Nimman 3’, it draws on his background in fashion and graphic design through an almost entirely white interior punctuated by exposed black cables and visible electrical sockets.

White concrete surfaces, linear blinds and strategically placed mirrors establish the room’s visual rhythm. The bed and open bathtub sit within the same pared-back composition, while wiring traces lines across surfaces that would ordinarily conceal it.

There is humour in this exposure of the room’s practical workings: cables and fittings become as much a part of its identity as the furniture.

At ground level, Jarid introduces warmer materials and a softer atmosphere. Timber finishes, greenery and suspended lighting frame a menu that approaches familiar Thai dishes through changes in form, texture and presentation.

The Miang Kham Cigar compresses the traditional snack’s herbal, sweet and savoury contrasts into a slender, cigar-shaped bite.

Kao Cook Kub Pod takes its inspiration from khao kluk kapi, bringing together vegetables, egg, chilli and savoury accompaniments for guests to combine at the table.

Lamb Ribs Green Curry moves towards richer flavours, pairing tender lamb with aromatic green curry, coconut cream and roti for gathering the sauce.

For dessert, Mango Sticky Rice arranges the fruit into delicate roses alongside colourful sticky rice, coconut ice cream and crumble.

On the eighth floor, Surr Bar takes Surrealism as its starting point. An unconventional 16-hour clock introduces a drinks programme in which colour and appearance do not always suggest what is in the glass.

Among the signatures, 16 HOUR combines vanilla, bourbon, lime, Bénédictine D.O.M. and single malt whisky. Its pale appearance and citrus character give a lighter impression than the whisky-led ingredients might suggest.

CHAOS REIGN brings together cherry, brandy, Campari, bourbon, Grand Marnier and aromatic bitters in a darker, more spirit-forward composition. Alongside it, The Windy Martini adopts a spare presentation in classic Martini-style glassware.

Our visit coincided with Negroni Week 2026, from 21 to 27 September. Surr Bar joined participating venues across Chiang Mai in a programme of Negroni interpretations, with Campari tokens encouraging exploration between bars. The event connected the hotel’s rooftop setting with the city’s wider cocktail scene.

Art Mai is most distinctive where its artistic references take physical form: in the exposed workings of Jitsing Somboon’s room, the shaped bites at Jarid and Surr Bar’s altered sense of time. These details give the stay its character while connecting it to Nimman’s creative surroundings. The gallery becomes somewhere to spend the night, with art influencing how each space is seen and experienced.
