Sixty years after Robert Mondavi established his winery in Oakville, the Napa Valley institution has reopened following a three-year transformation. The project is the estate’s most substantial physical renewal since 1966, updating its visitor experience and production facilities while keeping the architecture that has made the winery one of California’s most recognisable.

The reopening, which took place on 20 April, introduces a new hospitality wing, expanded tasting rooms that move between interior spaces and the vineyard, updated culinary areas and new winemaking facilities. Reservations are now open for the refreshed visitor programme.

At the centre remains the familiar arch and tower designed by Cliff May. Both have been restored as part of a larger architectural and landscape intervention by Aidlin Darling Design and Surfacedesign, respectively. New pathways, terraces and planted spaces draw guests closer to the vines, framing the estate less as a monument than as a working landscape.

Robert Mondavi Winery has long occupied a particular place in the story of American wine. When Robert Mondavi founded the estate in 1966, it was the first major new winery to open in Napa Valley after Prohibition. His ambition was direct: to prove that California could produce wines with the stature of Europe’s established regions.

That idea shaped both the winery and the valley around it. Mondavi invested in vineyard work, temperature-controlled fermentation and French oak ageing at a time when these approaches were still far from standard in California. He also introduced Fumé Blanc, giving Sauvignon Blanc a more serious and distinctive place in American wine culture.

His collaborations extended beyond Napa. Opus One, created with Baron Philippe de Rothschild, became one of the defining partnerships of modern wine, while Tenuta Luce in Tuscany and Seña in Chile widened the conversation around regional identity, craft and international exchange.

The winery’s foundation remains To Kalon Vineyard, the Oakville site whose name translates loosely as “the highest beauty”. Positioned at the foot of the Mayacamas Mountains, the vineyard combines deep alluvial soils, long afternoon light and cooling influences from San Pablo Bay. It is now certified organic by California Certified Organic Farmers, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc continuing to anchor Robert Mondavi Winery’s most important releases.

For Director of Winemaking Kurtis Ogasawara, To Kalon Cabernet is defined by dark fruit, dried herbs, natural acidity and fine-grained tannins. It is a profile that places structure before excess, and one that has helped make the vineyard a benchmark for Napa Valley Cabernet.

The reopening is marked by the 2023 60th Anniversary Commemorative Edition Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Produced in limited quantities, the wine draws from selected blocks in To Kalon Vineyard and Wappo Hill Vineyard in Stags Leap District, bringing together heritage Cabernet clones from two of Napa’s most regarded sites.

The 2023 growing season was notably long, allowing fruit to ripen slowly and evenly. The resulting wine is shaped by concentrated berry fruit, cedar, leather and fresh acidity, with a firm but measured tannin structure. It arrives in a dedicated presentation box, conceived as much for collectors as for the table.

The commemorative release has already received 95 points from VinePair, which named it among its 30 Best Cabernet Sauvignons for 2026. The publication noted its balance between fruit, tannin and acidity, with ripe berries, cedar and worn leather on the nose.

In Bangkok, the limited-edition bottle will be available from June at Wolfgang’s Steakhouse Bangkok, Davin Cafe, Grand Hyatt Erawan Bangkok, Hyatt Regency Bangkok Sukhumvit and Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok.

Alongside the anniversary release, Robert Mondavi Winery is also launching a by-the-glass programme for its Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon across selected Bangkok restaurants and hotels. It offers a more immediate way to encounter one of Napa’s defining reds: not only as a cellar bottle or special-occasion purchase, but as part of an evening meal.

Six decades on, Robert Mondavi Winery is still grounded in the same proposition that shaped its opening: Napa Valley wine can be serious, expressive and internationally relevant, without losing sight of the landscape that produced it. Visit: https://robertmondaviwinery.com/
