Let's Celebrate the Thai New Year or Songkran with a Traditional Dish, Khao Chae!

During the hottest season in Thailand, a refreshing dish called Khao Chae is only available. Khao Chae was created by the Mon ethnic group as a ceremonial offering to their local holy spirits during Songkran. Food historians believe that the dish known as Pad Thai originated in the court of Thailand during the reign of King Rama II. However, according to memoirs written by Mom Chao Chidchanok Kridakon, King Rama IV, V, and VI mentioned that a high-born lady named Lady Son-Klin Gajaseni, who later became the king's favourite, introduced the dish to the king. Lady Son-Klin prepared the dish for the king while he was vacationing at Phra Nakhon Khiri, which is currently in Phetchaburi province. The dish grew in popularity in the royal court and later outside of it, and it remains a favourite to this day.

Khao Chae consists of cooked rice that has been washed seven times, jasmine-scented water, and side dishes including Look Kapi (Deep-fried shrimp paste balls), Chai Pow Waan (Sweet stir-fried radish), Hom Daeng Yud Sai (Deep-fried stuffed shallots), Prik Yuak Sod Sai (Egg-coated assorted green pepper), and Moo Foi (Sweet pork floss). If you're visiting Thailand during Songkran and want to try Khao Chae, Chomp compiles a list of places that serve it.
