On the 20th of June 2023 in Valencia, Spain, the gastronomy community gathered to celebrate The World's 50 Best Restaurants Awards 2023, sponsored by S.Pellegrino & Acqua Panna. Lima's Central was announced as The World's Best Restaurant 2023 and The Best Restaurant in South America 2023. The awards ceremony occurred at the Les Arts Opera House and recognized the top culinary talent from twenty four territories across five continents.
The Lima restaurant of chefs Virgilio Martinez and Pía León has claimed the number one spot, replacing last year's winner Geranium from Copenhagen, which has now been inducted into the Best of the Best Hall of Fame.
This year, several Asian restaurants made it to the list of the best restaurants. Singapore's Odette secured the 14th spot on the list, while Thailand's Le Du, which was named The Best Restaurant in Asia at Asia's 50 Best Restaurants 2023, entered the list for the first time at No.15. Gaggan Anand, another Thai restaurant, also made its debut on the list and was ranked at No.17. Den, Florilège, and Sézanne, all from Japan, secured the 21st, 27th, and 37th spots, respectively. The Chairman from Hong Kong was ranked at No.50.
This year's honourable awards went to:
Pía Salazar of Nuema in Quito, Ecuador, received The World's Best Pastry Chef Award, sponsored by Sosa
The Beronia World's Best Sommelier Award was presented to Miguel Ángel Millán of Diverxo in Madrid, Spain
Fyn in Cape Town won the Flor de Caña Sustainable Restaurant Award
Table by Bruno Verjus (No.10) in Paris, France, took homes the Highest New Entry Award, sponsored by Aspire Lifestyles
Atomix (No.8) was awarded the Villa Massa Highest Climber Award, as the New York restaurant climbs 25 places from the 2022 list
Alchemist (No.5) in Copenhagen, Denmark, won the Gin Mare Art of Hospitality Award
Estrella Damm Chefs' Choice Award went to Julien Royer of Odette in Singapore
